I was inspired to learn that Jean Baptiste Le Du, an 1850's Gold Rush miner, was still walking from his town of North Bloomfield to Nevada City for supplies in his 80's. That's a twenty mile stretch easy. Most folks went by horseback, wagon, or stagecoach back in the day, but when they offered him a ride he declined, saying the walk kept him "hale and hearty".
Oh how I wish we could all take that peaceful, backwoods trip along the old North Bloomfield dirt road today. And guess what? We can! That road to Malakoff Diggins SHP turns to dirt quickly and winds its way through forested and stream cut Sierra granite terrain. Walking, biking, or even slowly driving, it's a beautiful route to the park. I'd choose getting outside and walking it of course...
