As I read about trends in environmental education and new state approved curriculum for teachers to improve their students' environmental literacy and meet state standards in English, math, science and social sciences, I keep finding that Fieldguides program content is a perfect fit. The National Science Foundation was recently directed to fund a report on effective practices in STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) in hopes of ultimately supporting their implementation and improving student outcomes.
Some of what they discovered is what Fieldguides has been doing for the past 30 years! Experiential Learning is the foundation of what we do. By immersing the kids in the outdoor environment and giving them the time to explore and be exposed to the wonders of nature (both with a focused activity and in less structured time), we Foster Curiosity. Our group games and unique family-camping style in which everyone works together learning and doing chores are designed to Increase Collaboration and Teamwork among the students.
I can attest to it NSF, your findings are sound!
