Family Days with Fieldguides

Join us for 4 - 7 days of fun at beautiful Camp Unalayee in the Trinity Alps Wilderness! The program is open to adults and children of all ages. Don't miss this opportunity to close out your summer with an escape into the outdoors with the help of our amazing staff! We know how hard a full year+ of the pandemic has been for everyone and we are excited to give folks a chance to get outside and reconnect with family and friends.

Fieldguides has a variety of protocols in place to help keep folks safe during the program. We require pre-trip Covid testing or Covid vaccinations for all participants. Thanks to the gorgeous Mosquito Lake basin there is plenty of room for everyone involved to keep themselves or their families safe and enjoy the mountains and friendships that are so special to this place.

What to Expect

This program is a rustic camping adventure with no electricity, cell service, or indoor plumbing (showers are solar!).
During our "Standard Program" we will offer a variety of optional activities or the freedom to relax and do your own thing. Activities include:
  • Swimming, boating, fishing, and relaxing at the lake
  • Day hikes for all ability levels
  • Arts and crafts
  • Rock climbing
  • Overnight hikes (advance notice required)
Each night also includes a campfire to share stories, songs, and skits. It provides a chance to sit next to the fire and look out at the brilliant night sky. For a more complete breakdown, view a sample day's schedule.

Our "Extended Stay" program will have an even more relaxed and informal feeling. This program is for those who want to feel at home in the mountains and spend even more time soaking up the mountain air and connecting with friends and family. During this time, there will be fewer formal staff led activities and we will begin to close down the camp. We will still:
  • Provide 3 full meals per day
  • Have a lifeguard on duty & plenty of time at the waterfront
  • Assist with day hikes for interested participants
  • Build a nightly campfire, with less formal programming

What we provide & What you'll need

Fieldguides provides all food for the program, including three meals a day and snacks. We can also supply tents and other camping gear upon request. To see what you'll need please read our equipment list. Items on the list with an asterisk can be provided by Fieldguides for your use, so if you don't have something please let us know.

Getting There

The Mosquito Lake Basin (named by protective fisherfolk to deter unwanted visitors) is located at the end of a seven mile unpaved road in the Trinity Alps Wilderness in Northern California. Getting there, however, is as easy as driving to Scott Mountain Summit, located along Highway 3 outside of Callahan, CA.  Fieldguides will meet participants at the Wilderness Gate between 2:00pm and 3:00pm on Wednesday, August 18th to help shuttle people and luggage to the base camp. For those arriving on a different date, please contact us to arrange pick-up or transportation assistance.
