Nighttime Activities

One of the special aspects of our camping programs is that the fun doesn't go down with the sun at Fieldguides. Part of helping students connect with nature is getting them to appreciate and enjoy a part of it they rarely experience, the world at night. Along with musical and entertainment filled campfires Fieldguides offers unique night hikes, square dances, and stargazing activities that capture student's imaginations and help remind them that the world keeps on turning when they go to sleep.
Stargazing Comic
Stargazing
Imagine lying on your back... relaxed.. feeling gravity's pull towards mother earth... and take a tour that not only leads you out into the stars but takes you down to the center of the earth as well. Explore the stars, earth, and matter that makes up our universe; from the farthest galaxy to the smallest atom and our special place in the middle of it all.

Night Hikes
Why is it that so many creatures of the night have big eyes and ears? How do bats find little insects to eat in almost total darkness? Answer questions like these by venturing into the night to experience the life of a nocturnal animal with activities designed to sharpen awareness through trusting senses other than vision, and to discover how bodies adapt to a lack of light. By the end you might even be surprised by your own night vision!
Square Dancing
Inspired by our Malakoff Diggins Gold Rush program FIELDGUIDES has integrated a fun and lively square dance option into its evening activities. While initially introduced to capture the "good old days" of the 49er miners, we have found that an old fashioned line dance is often just the thing to fully engage students, teachers, and chaperones regardless of the setting. It is a perfect way to celebrate and connect with each other in an energetic atmosphere where everyone can shout, clap, and holler along with the hoedown provided by our always talented FIELDGUIDES staff.
