Middle School Expeditions

Middle School is often a challenging and transformative time for students. We believe this is a powerful time for students to experience nature. Our middle school Backpacking Programs are designed to build upon the skills gained each year, helping students maintain and deepen their connection with the outdoors and add new collaborative and wilderness skills. The overall goal of our 3-year program is to work towards a student designed and led backpacking trip and community exhibition. Although the overall program is designed to work best as a three-year program, each trip can be offered as a stand alone expedition and specialized backpacking trips can be designed to meet your needs.  We can customize our program to include the interpersonal & technical skills of your choosing with the trip length, location, and time of year that works best for you!

Introduction to the Outdoors: 6th Grade Program

Our 6th Grade Program focuses on teamwork and communication while introducing students to basic wilderness skills such as fire building, knot tying, and tarp setting. For our full program, your 6th grade class will go on a three-day camping trip in the fall, followed up by a two-night backpacking trip in the spring.

Gaining Confidence: 7th Grade Program

Our 7th Grade Program focuses on problem-solving and collaboration. In 7th Grade the students will build upon their wilderness skills with a focus on navigation using a map and compass. Students will go on a four-day backpacking trip where they will be responsible for leading major sections of the trip to practice their navigation and leadership skills.

Wilderness Leadership: 8th Grade Program

Our 8th Grade Program is designed to help students utilize all their skills and create a culminating backpacking expedition and community exhibition. Students will spend three days in the fall planning the food and route for their five day backpacking trip in the spring. They will also work to share what they have learned throughout their entire FIELDGUIDES experience with friends, family, and the wider community in a student-led and designed exhibition night.
